This is the best known side dish in probably all Czech meals.  It goes great with anything, it is a steamed bread.  But it is so much better than bread in my opinion, because it soaks up flavors a lot better.  Another great thing about these dumpling are that they can be frozen and then when you are ready to eat them throw them in some boiling water, and they are ready to go.  But they should only stay in the freezer for about a month otherwise they get the freezer burn, and don’t taste good.

Ingredients you will need…

  • 1 cup lukewarm milk
  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt

1.)  Pour lukewarm milk into bowl with a hook attachment. Mix in the sugar until dissolved, add in 3 tablespoons of flour and mix with a fork until combined, next sprinkle the yeast on top and let hit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

2.)  Combine the salt into the flour, and add to the mixing bowl with milk and yeast mixture. Add the eggs at same time as flour, mix with hook attachment, until it the sides of mixing bowl are clean and dough isn’t sticky.

3.)  Let the dough rest in bowl until double in size, cover with towel, about 1 1/2-2 hours.

4.)  Once it is double in size, roll it into a log shape using more flour as needed and cut into 3 even pieces, or 4 smaller pieces.

5.)  Roll each piece of dough into a log shape, and cover with towel for another hour until doubled in size. While you are waiting get your pot of water ready, make sure to pot is big enough to fit the dumpling.

6.)  Make sure that your water is boiling before you add in the dumpling. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to boiling water and add in one of the dumpling, Boil for 20-25 minutes depending on size and about half way through flip it over

7.)  Remove from the boiling water after 20-25 minutes, place on a cutting board and they are ready to be sliced and served. Add in the remaining dumplings, or you can freeze them and use them for another dish. Enjoy.
